Gluten free and weight loss

A strict gluten-free diet is essential for people with an inflammatory condition known as coeliac disease. However, many people who buy gluten-free products are doing so because these foods are healthier, not because they have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance. Third reason why many people following gluten free diets experience weight loss is that they increase intake of many additional food groups. Adding these help them remove defenciencies and stimulates the whole system to gear towards weight correction.

If weight loss is your goal (and if you don’t need to go gluten-free because of coeliac disease or gluten intolerance), try focusing on your portion sizes as well. For lunch or dinner, half of your plate should be made up of vegetables or raw salad, a quarter should be protein and a quarter of carbohydrates. thats is where you can include gluten free flours. They are healthy, nutritious and will help you all the way to reach your goal.

If you do decide to go gluten-free, then skip unhealthy packaged foods, fast foods foods and include plenty of variety in your diet, with lots of vegetables, fruit, lean sources of protein, dairy and low GI, gluten-free grains and legumes. This will ensure you’re eating from all the food groups and getting a wide range of nutrients.

Gluten free diets for weight loss are best used when you reach a plateau in your weight loss journey . There comes a point when your body gets used to the exercises and walking you do and now adjusts to whatever little calories you are intaking. This happens in a lot of cases where despite of all efforts you don't lose a bit. Breaking this plateau requires a lot of patience; here is what you can do exercise wise – stop doing what you are already doing for a week, and then surprise your body with a new activity like swimming / zumba dancing / skating / gyming / playing badminton or lawn tennis, whatever suits you best. Food wise – surprise your body yet again by consuming food stuffs that you never did, it changes your metabolic graph and hence makes you lose weight. For example if you have been eating wheat and rice as staples so far, don't eat them for an entire week and consume other cereals like bajra, jowar, ragi etc or go gluten free.

We all always want to lose weight to get to our optimum weights. If we can get ourselves healthier while getting the benefits of weight loss, we can safely conclude - gluten free is the way to go.
