Recipe:

Ingredient 

  • Idli rice - 1cup
  • Black gram/urad dal - 1cup
  • Ragi powder - 1cup
  • Chopped green chillies - 3
  • Chopped ginger - 2tsp
  • Chopped curry leaves - 1tbsp
  • Water - as required to adjust the consistency
  • Salt - to taste

 

Method:

  1. Wash and soak the lentils for 5hrs.
  2. Using a mixer grinder grind it by adding enough water. The batter shouldn't be too thick nor too thin.
  3. Add ragi powder and enough water (or 1 1/4cup water approximately) and mix well. The consistency of the batter will change after the fermentation process. So don't add too much of water.
  4. Allow it to ferment for 7 to 8hrs approximately.
  5. Add chopped chillies, ginger n curry leaves n salt. Combine well.
  6. Grease the banana leaves with some oil and place it over the idli mould. Instead of banana leaves you can use Portia leaves.
  7. Pour the idli batter as shown in the video and steam it for 20 to 25mins. Done. Serve hot along with sambar, chutney etc.
